Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech → Dades Valley (via Ouarzazate)

Your adventure begins early in the morning as you’re picked up from your Marrakech riad or hotel. Heading south, you’ll wind up into the High Atlas Mountains via the spectacular Tizi n’Tichka pass, one of the highest and most scenic mountain roads in North Africa. Expect photo stops with views over Berber villages clinging to the hillsides, terraced fields, and snow-capped peaks in cooler months.

Descending the other side, you’ll reach Ait Benhaddou for a first glimpse (a fuller visit happens on Day 4), before continuing to Ouarzazate, often called the “Hollywood of Morocco” thanks to its famous film studios where Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, and Game of Thrones scenes were shot. A quick stop at the Taourirt Kasbah offers a taste of traditional pisé (rammed-earth) architecture.

From Ouarzazate, the road continues through the Skoura Oasis, a lush palm grove dotted with centuries-old kasbahs, and the fragrant Valley of Roses, before arriving in the dramatic Dades Valley, famous for its folded rock formations known as the “Monkey Fingers.” Overnight in a cozy guesthouse with valley views.

Day 2: Dades → Merzouga Desert (via Todra Gorges)

After breakfast, drive deeper into the Dades Gorges, admiring the twisting canyon road before heading toward the Todra Gorges — a jaw-dropping limestone canyon with sheer walls rising up to 300 meters. Take time to walk along the riverbed at the base of the gorge, one of Morocco’s most popular rock-climbing spots, and enjoy a break at a local café tucked into the canyon.

Continuing east, the landscape transforms dramatically — lush valleys give way to rocky hamada plains, small Berber and Amazigh villages, and eventually the first golden dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon near Merzouga.

In the late afternoon, meet your camel guide and mount your camel for an unforgettable trek into the dunes. As the sun dips below the Sahara, the sky turns shades of pink, orange, and gold — a once-in-a-lifetime moment. Arrive at your traditional Berber desert camp, where a warm dinner awaits under a canopy of stars, often accompanied by Gnawa or Berber drumming around the campfire.

Day 3: Sahara Desert Exploration — Nomads & 4x4 Adventure

Wake before dawn (optional) to watch the sunrise over the dunes — one of the most magical experiences in Morocco. After breakfast at camp, today is dedicated to discovering the desert beyond the dunes.

Hop into a 4×4 for an exhilarating dune-bashing excursion, driving across the shifting sands and rocky flats surrounding Merzouga. Visit a nomadic family living a traditional, semi-nomadic lifestyle in the desert — share a glass of sweet mint tea, learn about their way of life, and see how they’ve adapted to one of the harshest environments on earth.

Your 4×4 route may also include stops at the Khamlia village, home of the Gnawa people known for their soulful spiritual music, and Erg Chebbi’s black nomad tents, plus a stop near the seasonal Dayet Srji lake, where flamingos sometimes gather. Return to camp in the late afternoon for a second night under the stars, giving you a full day to soak in the rhythm of desert life.

Day 4: Merzouga → Ait Benhaddou (via Agdz)

Rise early for one last sunrise over the dunes before saying goodbye to the desert. Ride your camel back to Merzouga village, freshen up, and begin the scenic drive west, this time via the Draa Valley and Agdz — Morocco’s longest river valley, lined with the largest palmery in the country and dotted with red kasbahs and green oases that feel worlds away from the desert you just left.

Stop in Agdz for a break and to browse local carpet cooperatives, then continue toward Ait Benhaddou, where you’ll now have a full guided visit of this stunning UNESCO-listed ksar. Wander through its narrow alleys, climb to the old granary at the top for panoramic views over the Ounila Valley, and learn about the earthen construction techniques that have kept this fortress-village standing for centuries.

Overnight in Ait Benhaddou or nearby Ouarzazate, allowing you to experience the kasbah in the golden evening light with far fewer crowds than a day-trip visit.

Day 5: Ait Benhaddou → Marrakech (via Ounilla Valley And Tizi Ntichka)

After breakfast, take a final morning stroll through Ait Benhaddou if you haven’t already, then begin the return journey to Marrakech, crossing back over the Tizi n’Tichka pass with one last set of stunning Atlas Mountain views. Stop along the way at a local Berber cooperative to learn about argan oil production, a cornerstone of the region’s economy and cuisine.

Arrive back in Marrakech in the afternoon, where you’ll be dropped off at your riad or hotel, full of memories, photos, and a genuine feel for Morocco’s south — its kasbahs, its mountains, and its desert.

Is this tour suitable for families with children?

Yes. The pace is relaxed and flexible, with plenty of stops. Camel rides can be shortened for young children, and drivers are used to accommodating families.

How fit do I need to be for the camel trek?

No special fitness is required. The camel trek to the camp typically takes 45–60 minutes and is suitable for most ages and abilities. Those with back issues can request a 4×4 transfer to camp instead of the camel ride.

What is the desert camp like?

Camps range from standard shared-toilet Berber tents to more comfortable “luxury” camps with private en-suite bathrooms. Let your operator know your preference when booking, as pricing varies accordingly.

What should I pack?

Comfortable walking shoes, a warm layer for desert nights (temperatures drop significantly after sunset, even in summer), sunscreen, a scarf or turban for sand protection, a swimsuit if your hotel has a pool, and a camera or phone with plenty of storage.

Is it safe to travel in this region of Morocco?

Yes, this route is one of the most traveled tourist circuits in Morocco and is considered very safe. Your driver-guide is experienced and knows the roads well, including mountain passes.

Can the itinerary be customized?

What is the best time of year to do this tour?

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer the most pleasant temperatures for both the mountains and the desert. Summer can be extremely hot in Merzouga (40°C+), while winter nights in the desert and Dades can be cold.

Will I have Wi-Fi or phone signal in the desert?

Mobile signal is generally available in Merzouga town and sometimes at the edge of the dunes, but most desert camps do have Wi-Fi .

Are meals included, and can dietary restrictions be accommodated?

Breakfasts and dinners are included; other meals like Lunches are at your own expense, giving you freedom to try local restaurants. Vegetarian, vegan, and other dietary needs can usually be accommodated with advance notice.

How do you book & pay?

Find the trek you are interested in then contact us via E-mail to discuss your trek and check availability. Once the details of your trek (duration, route and number of people) have been agreed, we will make a provisional booking, giving the dates and cost.
To confirm your booking we ask you to pay a 20% deposit. This can be in Euros, pounds sterling or US dollars online via bank account. The balance is paid in Morocco by cash – again in Euros, sterling or dollars – at the beginning of the trek.
NB: if you can’t carry cash, you can always pay again the balance online by bank few days before departure.
