Itinerary

Day 1 - Marrakech to Imi Oughlad – Hike to Ait Aissa in Azzaden Valley

Your journey begins with a morning drive from Marrakech to Imi Oughlad (1,450m), the starting point of your trek. After meeting your guide and mule team, start hiking through the verdant juniper and pine forests of the Atlas Mountains. Pass through small Berber villages and enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks. The day ends in Ait Aissa (1,800m), a quaint village in the picturesque Azzaden Valley.

  • Driving time: 1.5 hours (70km).
  • Hiking distance: 10km (5-6 hours).
  • Elevation gain: 350m.
  • Accommodation: Berber guesthouse in Ait Aissa, private room.
  • Meals: Lunch and dinner.

Day 2 - Ait Aissa to Imlil Valley via Tizi Mzik Pass

After breakfast, begin your ascent to Tizi Mzik Pass (2,489m). The trail offers stunning views of the surrounding valleys and the snow-capped peaks of the High Atlas. Descend into the lush Imlil Valley, passing terraced fields, orchards, and streams along the way. The day concludes in Imlil (1,740m), where you’ll stay at a cozy guesthouse nestled in the heart of the valley.

  • Hiking distance: 12km (6-7 hours).
  • Elevation gain/loss: +689m / -749m.
  • Accommodation: Berber guesthouse in Imlil, private room.
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Day 3 - Imlil Valley to Agafay Desert – Camel Ride – Return to Marrakech

After breakfast, take a scenic drive from Imlil to the Agafay Desert. Upon arrival, you’ll experience a peaceful camel ride through the rocky desert’s rolling hills, soaking in the tranquility of this unique landscape. Afterward, continue your journey back to Marrakech, arriving by late afternoon.

  • Driving time: 3.5 hours (140km).
  • Camel ride duration: 1 hour.
  • Meals: Breakfast and lunch.

Accommodation

The Accommodation will be in a simple berber guesthouse in Imlil Village.
NB : If accommodation is required in the Atlas Mountains either before or after the trek, we can always book you at  Dar Adrar in Imlil or in  Eco-loge in Ouirgane or Riad View Point in Marrakech.

  • Good walking boots and socks / good trainers for valley treks
  • Personnel First aid Kit
  • 3 to 4 season sleeping bag ( winter) or light Sleeping bag ( Summer)
  • Lightweight waterproof over-trousers / rain-pants
  • Water bottle or camel back (recommended)
  • Soft-sided bag (50-80 litres)

  • Torch and batteries
  • Towel & all personal toiletries

Most of those equipment can be rented locally from our equipment shop in Imlil:

  4.  Walking Poles : 3 €/day/pair   
  5.  Back packs : 3€/day

Start Point ? Finish Point?

  • You will be picked up from your accommodation in Marrakech city, many riads does not have access by car so the driver will park nearby and come to get you.
  • You will be droped off at the nearest point to your riad/hotel , our driver can call your riad to meet you if needed.

What level of fitness is required for this trek?

This trek is suitable for individuals with moderate to high fitness levels. Some sections are challenging but manageable with proper preparation.

When is the best time to trek in the Atlas Mountains?

 The ideal time is from April to October, offering pleasant weather and clear views. Winter months are also possible but may require additional gear for snow.

Are vegetarian or special dietary requirements accommodated?

Yes, dietary needs can be accommodated with advance notice. Inform the organizer when booking.

Are the camel rides safe for all ages?

Yes, the camel ride is safe and suitable for all ages, with guides ensuring your comfort and safety.

How do you book & pay?

Find the trek you are interested in then contact us via E-mail to discuss your trek and check availability. Once the details of your trek (duration, route and number of people) have been agreed, we will make a provisional booking, giving the dates and cost.
To confirm your booking we ask you to pay a 20% deposit. This can be in Euros, pounds sterling or US dollars  online via bank account. The balance is paid in Morocco by cash – again in Euros, sterling or dollars – at the beginning of the trek.
NB: if you can’t carry cash, you can always pay again the balance online by bank few days before departure.
