This 5 Days Atlas Mountains Day Hike and Sahara Desert Adventure pairs two of Morocco’s most iconic landscapes: the towering peaks of the High Atlas Mountains and the endless golden dunes of the Sahara. It begins with a day of hiking through the dramatic Imlil Valley, home to Berber villages, walnut groves, and — for those who want the challenge — the option to summit a peak reaching 2,700 meters. From there, the route winds south through legendary kasbahs, rugged gorges, and palm-lined valleys before arriving at the towering dunes of Erg Chebbi in Merzouga, where a camel trek and a night under the stars await.
This is a trip for travelers who want more than a bus-window tour — one day is spent on foot in the mountains among Berber shepherds and mule trails, and the following days unfold through some of Morocco’s most cinematic desert scenery: Ouarzazate’s kasbahs, the Dades Gorges, the dunes of the Sahara, and the UNESCO-listed Ait Benhaddou, ending with a scenic drive home through the lesser-traveled Ounila Valley. It’s an ideal combination for hikers, photographers, and anyone wanting to experience both Morocco’s mountains and its desert in a single, well-paced week.
Depart Marrakech in the morning and drive roughly 1.5 hours into the High Atlas Mountains, arriving in Imlil, the trailhead village for many of Morocco’s best-known mountain routes and gateway to Mount Toubkal, North Africa’s highest peak.
From Imlil, set off on foot with your local mountain guide. The standard route winds through the Imlil Valley, passing terraced fields, walnut and cherry orchards, and traditional Berber villages built into the hillside, such as Aroumd and Around. Along the way, you’ll pass mule trains carrying supplies to mountain refuges, greet local families, and take in sweeping views of the valley below.
For more ambitious hikers, there’s the option to push higher toward a summit of approximately 2,700 meters, offering rewarding panoramic views over the Atlas range — a great warm-up hike if you’re considering Toubkal in the future, or simply a satisfying challenge in its own right. This option requires reasonable fitness and is done at your own pace with the guide.
In the late afternoon, descend back into Imlil and settle into a cozy Berber guesthouse, where a home-cooked Moroccan dinner (optional, at own expense) and warm mountain hospitality await.
Overnight: Berber Guesthouse, Imlil | Meals: Lunch,Dinner and Breakfast
After breakfast with mountain views, descend from Imlil back toward Marrakech’s outskirts before turning south and climbing over the Tizi n’Tichka pass, one of North Africa’s most scenic mountain roads, with switchbacks offering sweeping views over Berber villages and terraced valleys.
Continue to Ouarzazate, known as the “Hollywood of Morocco” for its film studios that have hosted productions like Gladiator and Game of Thrones. Stop to visit the Taourirt Kasbah, a beautifully preserved example of traditional pisé (rammed-earth) architecture.
From Ouarzazate, drive through the Skoura Oasis, a palm grove dotted with centuries-old kasbahs, before reaching the dramatic Dades Valley and its famous folded rock formations known as the “Monkey Fingers.” Settle into your guesthouse for the night, surrounded by the valley’s striking red cliffs.
Overnight: Dades Valley | Meals: dinner and Breakfast
This morning, take some time to admire the Dades Gorges, a dramatic canyon carved by the Dades River, before continuing east across the changing landscape — rolling hamada plains, fossil-rich rock formations, and scattered oasis towns — toward Merzouga.
As you approach Merzouga, the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi rise from the desert floor, some reaching over 150 meters high. In the late afternoon, meet your camel guide for an unforgettable trek into the dunes, arriving in time to watch the sun set in brilliant shades of orange and gold over the Sahara.
Arrive at your traditional Berber desert camp, where a warm dinner is served under the stars, often accompanied by traditional Gnawa or Berber music around the campfire — a magical end to the day.
Overnight: Desert Camp, Erg Chebbi | Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Wake early (optional) for a sunrise over the dunes, one of the most memorable moments of the trip, before riding your camel back to Merzouga village for breakfast.
Begin the scenic drive west via the Draa Valley and Agdz, home to Morocco’s longest river and largest palm grove, dotted with red-earth kasbahs, green oases, and traditional villages. Stop in Agdz for a break and the chance to browse local carpet cooperatives.
Continue toward Ait Benhaddou, timing your arrival for the afternoon and sunset, when the fortress-village’s earthen walls glow deep red-gold in the fading light. Take a guided walk through this UNESCO World Heritage ksar — one of Morocco’s best-preserved examples of traditional kasbah architecture and a filming location for movies including Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, and Game of Thrones. Climb to the old granary at the top for panoramic views over the Ounila Valley as the sun sets — a truly unforgettable photo opportunity.
Overnight: Ait Benhaddou / Ouarzazate | Meals: Breakfast and dinner
After breakfast, depart Ait Benhaddou and take the scenic, lesser-traveled route through the Ounila Valley, a beautiful stretch of palm groves, old kasbahs, and traditional Berber villages tucked along the Ounila River — a peaceful contrast to the more heavily touristed roads.
Rejoin the main route and cross back over the Tizi n’Tichka pass for one final set of stunning High Atlas views. Depending on timing, stop at a Berber women’s cooperative to see traditional argan oil production, a signature product of the region.
Arrive back in Marrakech in the afternoon, where you’ll be dropped off at your riad or hotel — completing a week that took you from mountain trails to desert dunes and back again.
