Mount Toubkal Winter Climb 3-Day Snow and Ice Summit Trek

Mount Toubkal Winter Climb – 3-Day Snow and Ice Summit Trek

Overview

Experience the High Atlas Mountains at their most dramatic on this 3-Day Mount Toubkal Winter Climb, a challenging snow-and-ice adventure to the summit of Mount Toubkal at 4,167 metres, the highest mountain in Morocco and North Africa.

During winter, the landscape around Toubkal is transformed by snow, frozen slopes and spectacular alpine scenery. This is very different from a summer Toubkal trek: higher sections of the route can be covered in snow and ice, temperatures can fall well below freezing, and conditions may change quickly. For this reason, the climb is planned at a steady pace with an experienced local mountain guide and the appropriate winter equipment.

Your adventure begins in Marrakech, with a scenic transfer to Imlil, the traditional gateway to Mount Toubkal. From Imlil, you trek through Aremd village and the upper Mizane Valley before reaching the Toubkal Refuge, located at approximately 3,200 metres.

The following morning is the highlight of the adventure. After an early breakfast, you begin the summit ascent in winter conditions, using crampons and an ice axe when required by the snow and terrain. The route climbs steadily toward the Tizi n’Toubkal area before continuing to the summit ridge and the spectacular summit of Mount Toubkal.

From the summit, weather permitting, you can enjoy extraordinary views across the High Atlas Mountains and far beyond. After celebrating your achievement, you descend to the refuge before continuing back toward Imlil on the final day.

This trek is ideal for adventurous travellers looking for a genuine winter mountain experience close to Marrakech. A good level of fitness, appropriate clothing and some previous hiking experience are strongly recommended. The exact route and summit attempt will always depend on weather, snow conditions and mountain safety.

Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech – Imlil – Aremd – Sidi Chamharouch – Toubkal Refuge

Trekking time: approximately 5–6 hours
Starting altitude: approximately 1,760m
Overnight: Toubkal Refuge, approximately 3,200m

Your Mount Toubkal winter adventure begins with an early morning pickup from your accommodation in Marrakech. We drive south toward the High Atlas Mountains, passing through the scenic foothills before reaching Imlil, the main starting point for Toubkal treks.

After meeting your mountain guide and support team, you begin walking from Imlil through the beautiful mountain landscape. The trail leads toward Aremd, one of the largest traditional villages in the area, before continuing deeper into the Mizane Valley.

As you gain altitude, the scenery gradually changes. Terraced fields, walnut trees and villages give way to increasingly rugged mountain terrain. You continue toward Sidi Chamharouch, a well-known pilgrimage site and traditional stopping point on the Toubkal route.

After a break, the trail becomes steeper as you continue toward the upper valley. In winter, snow becomes increasingly common as you gain elevation, and the landscape takes on a true alpine character.

Eventually, you reach the Toubkal Refuge, situated at approximately 3,200m. After checking in, you have time to rest, hydrate and prepare your equipment for the following day’s summit attempt.

Dinner is served at the refuge, followed by an early night in preparation for the summit climb.

Overnight: Toubkal Refuge

Day 2: Toubkal Refuge – Mount Toubkal Summit 4,167m – Toubkal Refuge

Trekking time: approximately 7–9 hours
Highest point: 4,167m
Overnight: Toubkal Refuge

Today is the main challenge and the most rewarding day of the trek.

You wake early, usually before sunrise, and have breakfast before preparing for the summit ascent. Your guide will assess the current conditions and make sure that your clothing and equipment are appropriate before leaving the refuge.

Depending on the snow and ice conditions, crampons and an ice axe will be used on the appropriate sections of the route. Your guide will explain how to use them safely and will adjust the pace to the conditions and the group.

The ascent is steady and demanding. The thin air becomes increasingly noticeable as you climb higher, while the winter landscape opens into spectacular views of the surrounding High Atlas peaks.

You continue toward the upper slopes of Toubkal, following the safest route according to the current snow conditions. The final section leads toward the summit ridge and eventually to the summit of Mount Toubkal at 4,167m.

Standing on the summit is a remarkable achievement. Take time to celebrate, photograph the panoramic mountain scenery and enjoy the feeling of reaching the highest point in Morocco and North Africa, weather permitting.

After the summit, you begin the descent. Descending snow-covered terrain requires just as much attention as climbing, so you follow your guide’s instructions carefully.

You return to the Toubkal Refuge where you can rest, enjoy a warm meal and recover after the summit day.

Overnight: Toubkal Refuge

Day 3: Toubkal Refuge – Sidi Chamharouch – Aremd – Imlil – Marrakech

Trekking time: approximately 4–5 hours

After breakfast, you begin your descent from the Toubkal Refuge.

The route follows the Mizane Valley back toward Sidi Chamharouch. As you lose altitude, the snow gradually becomes less dominant and the landscape begins to change once again.

Continue through the valley toward Aremd, enjoying the views of traditional mountain villages, cultivated terraces and dramatic High Atlas scenery.

From Aremd, the trail continues to Imlil, where you meet your vehicle and complete the mountain section of your adventure.

After some time to relax and have lunch, your driver will take you back to Marrakech, where your 3-day Mount Toubkal winter adventure comes to an end.

You return to Marrakech with the memories of a spectacular snow-covered ascent of Morocco’s highest mountain.

Important Winter Trekking Information

Winter Toubkal is a serious mountain trek rather than an ordinary summer hike. Snow, ice, strong winds, low temperatures, reduced visibility and rapidly changing mountain conditions can affect the route.

Your mountain guide will assess the conditions throughout the trek and may adjust the route, timing or summit attempt when necessary. The safety of the group always comes first.

A summit attempt is therefore subject to suitable weather, snow conditions and the guide’s safety assessment. Reaching the summit cannot be guaranteed in unsafe conditions.

Good physical fitness is essential. Previous experience hiking in winter conditions is highly recommended, although the exact experience required depends on the conditions and the individual group.
