Best 2-Day Trek in the Atlas Mountains

Best 2-Day Trek in the Atlas Mountains: Azzaden valley to Imlil Valley via Tizi Oudid & Tizi Mzik Pass

Overview

This 2-day private trek is one of the most scenic short introductions to Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains, combining two classic mountain passes, remote Berber villages, and the spectacular Imlil waterfalls — all within an easy round trip from Marrakech. Starting with a scenic drive to the trailhead village of Aguersioual, you’ll cross the Tizi Oudid pass into the peaceful village of Tizi Oussem for an authentic overnight stay, before climbing over the higher Tizi Mzik pass (2,489m) on day two and descending into Imlil, the gateway village of Mount Toubkal.

Along the way you’ll walk through walnut groves, juniper forests, terraced fields, and traditional stone-built hamlets that have changed little over generations — accompanied throughout by a licensed local mountain guide.

This trek suits active travelers with a reasonable level of fitness who want a genuine mountain and cultural experience without committing to a longer expedition. It can be arranged as a private departure on almost any date of the year.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech → Aguersioual → Tizi Oudid Pass → Tizi Oussem

Distance/duration: Approx. 4–5 hours of walking | Drive: approx. 1.5–2 hours from Marrakech (approx. 75 km) | Elevation range: 1,600m – 2,000m – 1,900m

Your day begins with an early morning pick-up from your riad or hotel in Marrakech. Drive south through the foothill towns of Tahannaout and Asni, watching the High Atlas peaks grow closer, before turning off toward the trailhead village of Aguersioual (approx. 1,600m). Here you’ll meet your mountain guide and muleteer, enjoy a welcome glass of mint tea, and set off on foot.

The trail climbs steadily out of the valley through walnut groves and small hamlets, gaining roughly 400 meters of elevation as it winds up toward Tizi Oudid pass (approx. 2,000m). This is the high point of the day, and the reward is a wide panorama over the surrounding valleys and ridgelines of the Western High Atlas. After a break to take in the views (and a picnic lunch en route, weather and timing permitting), the trail descends through juniper forest and past the small settlement of Matate into the Azzaden Valley.

You’ll arrive in the late afternoon at Tizi Oussem (approx. 1,900m), a quiet, traditional Berber village tucked beneath the Azzaden Valley’s steep slopes and largely untouched by tourism. Settle into a simple family-run guesthouse, enjoy a home-cooked Berber dinner (tagine is the local specialty) with mint tea, and rest ahead of tomorrow’s crossing.

Overnight: Berber guesthouse in Tizi Oussem (twin/shared rooms, shared bathroom facilities)

Day 2: Tizi Oussem → Tizi Mzik Pass (2,489m) → Imlil → Imlil Waterfalls → Drive to Marrakech

Distance/duration: Approx. 5–6 hours of walking | Elevation range: 1,900m – 2,489m – 1,740m | Drive back: approx. 1.5–2 hours

After breakfast in Tizi Oussem, the trail climbs out of the Azzaden Valley toward the day’s main challenge: the Tizi Mzik pass at 2,489m, the highest point of the entire trek. The ascent gains close to 600 meters over several hours, passing through juniper woodland and rocky mountainside with ever-widening views. On a clear day, the summit of Mount Toubkal (4,167m) is visible in the distance, along with a sweeping panorama over the Imlil Valley below.

From the pass, the trail descends steadily toward Imlil (approx. 1,740m), the well-known trekking hub and starting point for Mount Toubkal expeditions. Before finishing in the village itself, you’ll make a short detour to the Imlil waterfalls, a scenic cascade tucked into the valley and a popular, refreshing stop for trekkers completing routes in this area — a fitting finale to two days on the trail.

Once in Imlil, say farewell to your guide and muleteer, enjoy a well-earned lunch, and take a short rest before your private vehicle collects you for the scenic drive back to Marrakech, arriving in the late afternoon or early evening.

Frequently Asked Questions

How difficult is this trek? This is a moderate trek suitable for anyone in reasonably good general fitness who is used to regular walking or hiking. Each day involves 4–6 hours of walking with a meaningful climb (400–600m of ascent), on established mule trails rather than technical terrain. No prior mountaineering experience is required.

What is the elevation of the highest point? The highest point of the trek is the Tizi Mzik pass at 2,489 metres, crossed on Day 2. Day 1’s Tizi Oudid pass sits at approximately 2,000 metres.

Do I need to be an experienced hiker to do this trek? No. While a reasonable fitness level and comfort walking several hours a day is important, this trek is accessible to most active travelers, including first-time trekkers, provided you’re used to some walking on uneven ground.

What should I pack? Comfortable, broken-in hiking boots, layered clothing (mountain weather can change quickly), a warm layer for evenings, sun protection, a refillable water bottle, and a basic daypack. Trekking poles are optional but helpful, particularly on the descents.

What is the accommodation like in Tizi Oussem? You’ll stay in a simple, family-run Berber guesthouse offering twin or shared rooms and shared bathroom facilities. It’s a basic but comfortable and authentic mountain experience, with home-cooked meals and genuine local hospitality.

Can this trek be done at any time of year? Yes, this route can be trekked year-round. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable temperatures and clearest views, summer is warm but manageable with an early start, and winter can bring snow to the higher pass — in which case appropriate footwear and clothing are essential. Your guide will advise on conditions closer to your travel date.

Is this trek private, or will I be joining a group? This itinerary is arranged as a private trek — it’s just you, your travel companions, your guide, and your muleteer. Departure dates are flexible and built entirely around your schedule.

Can this trek be extended or combined with a Mount Toubkal ascent? Yes. Since Imlil is the starting point for Mount Toubkal, this itinerary connects naturally with a Toubkal summit extension, or with a longer Atlas Mountains circuit. Let us know your interests when booking and we’ll tailor the plan accordingly.
