3-Day Atlas Mountains Three Valleys Trek

3-Day Atlas Mountains Three Valleys Trek: Imnane Valley, Azzaden Valley & Tizi Mzik Pass

Overview

This 3-Day Atlas Mountains Three Valleys Trek is one of the most rewarding classic circuits in the High Atlas Mountains, linking three of the region’s most scenic valleys — Imlil, Imnane, and Azzaden — via two spectacular mountain passes. Starting in Imlil, you’ll cross the Tizi n’Tamatert pass into the quieter Imnane Valley for your first night in the traditional village of Tinghrin. Day two takes you over the Tizi Oudid pass into the wilder Azzaden Valley, overnighting in the remote village of Id Aissa. On the final day, you’ll tackle the trek’s highest crossing, the Tizi Mzik pass (2,489m), before descending back to Imlil and driving home to Marrakech.

This route offers a genuine “three valleys” experience — authentic Berber villages, working farmland, forested passes, and constantly changing mountain scenery — making it an excellent choice for active travelers who want real immersion in the High Atlas without the extreme altitude of a summit expedition. As always, it’s arranged as a fully private trek, tailored to your dates and pace.

3-Day Atlas Mountains Three Valleys Trek detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech → Imlil → Trek to Tinghrin via Tizi n’Tamatert (2,300m)

Distance/duration: Approx. 5–6 hours of walking | Drive: approx. 1.5 hours from Marrakech (approx. 64 km) | Elevation range: 1,740m – 2,300m – 2,100m (approx.)

Your trek begins with an early morning pick-up from your riad or hotel in Marrakech. Drive south through Tahannaout and Asni to Imlil (1,740m), the main trailhead village of the Toubkal region, where you’ll meet your mountain guide and muleteer over a welcome glass of mint tea.

The trail climbs through the Tamatert Valley, passing walnut, cherry, and apple orchards and the villages of Aït Souka and Tamatert, before reaching the Tizi n’Tamatert pass (2,300m) after around two hours. From here, enjoy sweeping views back over the Imlil Valley and ahead into the Imnane Valley, with Mount Toubkal often visible on clear days. After a break and picnic lunch, the trail descends through pine and juniper forest into the Imnane Valley, following mule tracks past scattered farms and hamlets to Tinghrin, a traditional village where you’ll spend the night.

Enjoy a home-cooked Berber dinner and mint tea with your hosts, and rest ahead of tomorrow’s crossing.

Overnight: Berber guesthouse/gîte in Tinghrin (twin/shared rooms)

Day 2: Imnane Valley → Tizi Oudid → Azzaden Valley → Overnight in Id Aissa Village

Distance/duration: Approx. 5–6 hours of walking | Elevation range: 2,100m – 2,000m – 1,900m (approx.)

After breakfast, the trek leaves Tinghrin and the Imnane Valley behind, climbing gradually toward the Tizi Oudid pass (approx. 2,000m), the connecting point between the Imnane and Azzaden valleys. The ascent passes through open mountainside and pockets of juniper woodland, with the views widening as you near the top — a fine vantage point over both valleys and the ridgelines separating them.

From the pass, the trail descends into the Azzaden Valley, one of the more remote and less-visited valleys in the region, following mule trails past terraced fields and small Berber settlements. A picnic lunch is enjoyed en route, timing dependent on the day’s pace. In the afternoon, you’ll arrive at Id Aissa, a quiet traditional village in the Azzaden Valley, where you’ll settle into a simple guesthouse for your second night, with time to relax, explore the village, and enjoy the valley scenery before dinner.

Overnight: Berber guesthouse/gîte in Id Aissa village (twin/shared rooms)

Day 3: Id Aissa → Tizi Mzik Pass (2,489m) → Imlil → Drive to Marrakech

Distance/duration: Approx. 5–6 hours of walking | Elevation range: 1,900m – 2,489m – 1,740m (approx.) | Drive back: approx. 1.5–2 hours

Your final day begins with breakfast in Id Aissa before setting off for the trek’s highest and most rewarding crossing: the Tizi Mzik pass (2,489m). The ascent climbs steadily out of the Azzaden Valley through juniper forest and rocky mountainside, gaining around 600 metres over several hours. From the pass, the views are among the best of the entire trek — a wide panorama back over the Azzaden Valley and ahead toward Imlil and, on clear days, Mount Toubkal’s summit rising above the surrounding peaks.

After a well-earned rest at the top, the trail descends steadily toward Imlil (1,740m), arriving in the early afternoon. Enjoy a final lunch in the village, say farewell to your guide and muleteer, and settle into your private vehicle for the scenic drive back to Marrakech, arriving in the late afternoon or early evening.

Frequently Asked Questions

How difficult is this trek? This is a moderate trek suitable for travelers with a reasonable level of fitness who are comfortable with 5–6 hours of walking per day over three consecutive days. Day 3 involves the greatest elevation gain, climbing to the trek’s highest point at Tizi Mzik (2,489m), but no technical climbing skills are required.

What is the highest point of the trek? The highest point is the Tizi Mzik pass at 2,489 metres, crossed on Day 3. Day 1’s Tizi n’Tamatert pass sits at 2,300m, and Day 2’s Tizi Oudid pass at approximately 2,000m.

What makes this route special compared to other 3-day treks? This itinerary is unique in linking three distinct valleys — Imlil, Imnane, and Azzaden — each with its own character, villages, and scenery, via two different mountain passes plus a high-altitude finale. It’s an excellent way to see a real cross-section of the High Atlas in a single trip.

What are Tinghrin and Id Aissa like? Both are traditional, lightly-visited Berber villages offering simple guesthouse accommodation and authentic mountain hospitality — Tinghrin in the rural Imnane Valley, and Id Aissa in the more remote Azzaden Valley beneath the Tizi Mzik pass.

Do I need previous trekking experience? No prior mountaineering experience is necessary, but a good general fitness level and comfort with multi-day walking on mountain trails is recommended, particularly for the Day 3 ascent.

What should I pack? Comfortable, broken-in hiking boots, layered clothing for changing mountain temperatures, a warm layer for evenings and pass crossings, sun protection, a refillable water bottle, and a daypack. Trekking poles are recommended, especially for the descents.

What is the accommodation like? You’ll stay in simple, family-run Berber guesthouses/gîtes with twin or shared rooms and shared bathroom facilities — a genuine mountain experience with warm local hospitality and home-cooked meals each evening.

Is this trek suitable year-round? Yes, this route can generally be trekked throughout the year. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable temperatures and clearest views, summer is warm in the valleys but pleasant at altitude, and winter can bring snow to the higher passes, in which case warmer clothing and sturdier footwear are essential. Your guide will confirm current conditions ahead of your trip.

Is this trek private, or will I join a group? This itinerary is arranged as a fully private trek for you and your travel companions only, with your own dedicated guide and muleteer, and departure dates built entirely around your schedule.

Can this trek be extended or combined with a Mount Toubkal ascent? Yes. Since the route finishes in Imlil, the starting point for Mount Toubkal, this itinerary connects naturally with a Toubkal summit extension or a longer High Atlas circuit. Let us know your interests when booking and we’ll tailor the plan accordingly.
