Your journey begins with a departure from the red city of Marrakech. We leave the plains behind and ascend the winding roads of the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, the highest road artery in North Africa. At 2,260 meters, the vistas of the snow-capped Atlas peaks are nothing short of legendary.
After descending the southern slopes, the landscape transforms into a pre-Saharan desert. We stop to explore the labyrinthine corridors of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the backdrop for countless cinematic masterpieces. As the sun begins to dip, we drive through the “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs” and the lush Skoura palm grove, eventually arriving at the gateway of the M’Goun Valley.
The trek begins today as we meet our team of local muleteers. We set out on foot along the Asif M’Goun, a river that serves as the lifeblood of this region. This is the heart of rose country. We walk through a patchwork of terraced fields where barley, alfalfa, and almond trees are protected by thick hedges of Damascus Roses.
You will witness the daily rhythm of the Berber farmers and the intricate Seguia (gravity-fed) irrigation systems that have kept this oasis green for a millennium. We pass through ancient villages like El Kelaa M’Gouna, where the local economy revolves around the distillation of rose water and oils.
Today, the scenery takes a dramatic turn toward the spectacular. We leave the wide valley floor and enter the Agouti Gorges. The trail narrows, and the red ochre cliffs rise hundreds of feet above us, often leaving only a sliver of blue sky visible. We walk through the cool, shallow riverbed—an exhilarating experience that brings you face-to-face with the raw power of water and erosion.
Emerging from the canyons, the landscape opens up into the high-altitude plateaus of Alemdoun. The air becomes crisp, and the vegetation shifts to hardy juniper and wildflowers.
This is the day of true immersion. We ascend further onto the high plateaus, reaching the summer grazing lands of the Ait Atta nomads. These resilient families spend their lives moving between the Sahara and the High Atlas, living in traditional black wool tents.
We will have the rare privilege of observing their way of life—watching shepherds tend to their flocks and perhaps sharing a glass of “Berber Whiskey” (traditional mint tea) under a nomad’s tent. The panoramic views of the M’Goun Massif (the second-highest peak in North Africa) provide a majestic backdrop to this spiritual landscape.
We begin our descent back toward civilization, but not without one last natural wonder. We enter the Dades Valley and navigate the surreal “Monkey Fingers” (Les Doigts de Singe). These unique rock formations look like molten wax or giant fingers reaching out from the earth.
The trail winds through hidden canyons and narrow slot passages, requiring a bit of fun scrambling. We eventually emerge into the lush green palm groves of the Dades, where the contrast between the green trees and the red rocks is at its most vivid.
After a final breakfast overlooking the winding “snakes” of the Dades road, we begin our journey back to Marrakech. We stop in Ouarzazate, the “Hollywood of Africa,” to visit the Taourirt Kasbah and see where famous films were shot. We cross the High Atlas one last time, arriving back in the bustling souks of Marrakech by late afternoon, carrying the scent of roses and the peace of the mountains with us.
