Leave Marrakech behind and journey deep into one of the most spectacular and less-travelled corners of Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains.
The 3-Day Hidden Berber Villages & Azzaden Mountain Hut Trek from Marrakech is a genuine mountain journey created for travellers who want to experience more than the classic Imlil day hike or the busy Mount Toubkal summit trail.
Over three unforgettable days, you will trek from Imi Oughlad into the beautiful Azzaden Valley, walk between traditional Berber villages, discover the impressive Tamsoult Waterfalls and spend a night in a remote mountain refuge surrounded by the rugged peaks of the Toubkal National Park region.
The final day brings a rewarding mountain crossing back towards Imlil, either via the challenging Tizi n’Tzikert high route at approximately 2,900 metres or the classic Tizi Mzik Pass at 2,489 metres, depending on weather, trail conditions and the fitness of the group.
This is not a standard sightseeing tour.
It is a real High Atlas trekking experience combining mountain walking, village life, wild valleys and a night in an isolated mountain hut.
Duration: 3 Days / 2 Nights
Start and Finish: Marrakech
Trekking Area: Azzaden Valley and Toubkal National Park Region
Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging
Highest Point: Up to approximately 2,900m depending on the selected route
Walking Time: Approximately 5–7 hours per day
Accommodation: Berber Guesthouse and Mountain Refuge
Trek Style: Guided Private or Small-Group Trek
Best For: Hikers, active couples, friends and mountain lovers
Most short Atlas Mountains experiences remain close to Imlil or follow the popular Mount Toubkal trail.
This three-day trek takes a different direction.
Starting from Imi Oughlad, we enter the beautiful Azzaden Valley, a region known for its traditional Berber villages, terraced fields and dramatic mountain landscapes.
Instead of rushing between attractions, you travel through the mountains on foot.
You will meet local people, cross working agricultural landscapes and watch the scenery change as the village trails gradually lead towards the higher and wilder mountains.
One of the special features of this trek is the overnight stay at the Azib Tamsoult mountain refuge.
Far from Marrakech and the busy tourist areas, the refuge offers a genuine mountain atmosphere. After a full day of hiking and visiting Tamsoult Waterfalls, you spend the evening surrounded by the High Atlas Mountains.
With Toubkal Treks, we want this journey to feel like a mountain crossing rather than a normal tour.
Your High Atlas Mountains adventure begins in the morning with pickup from your accommodation in Marrakech.
Leaving the busy city behind, we drive south towards the foothills of the High Atlas Mountains. The journey gradually reveals a completely different side of Morocco as the flat plains surrounding Marrakech give way to deep valleys, traditional villages and rugged mountain peaks.
After approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, we arrive at Imi Oughlad, a traditional Berber village and one of the lesser-known gateways into the western side of the Toubkal National Park region.
Here, you will meet your local Toubkal Treks mountain guide and trekking team.
Your luggage will be organised and loaded onto the mule while you prepare your daypack for the trail.
After a short route briefing, our three-day mountain journey begins.
From Imi Oughlad, we leave the vehicle behind and begin trekking through the foothills of the High Atlas Mountains.
The trail gradually climbs above the village and opens onto beautiful views of the surrounding valleys.
This first section of the trek is an introduction to the landscapes and rhythms of the High Atlas.
You will walk along traditional mountain paths that have connected Berber communities for generations.
Depending on the season, the lower slopes may be covered with cultivated terraces, walnut trees and agricultural fields.
Your local guide will explain how families continue to live and farm in this mountainous environment.
As we continue deeper into the mountains, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic.
The trail leads us towards the Azzaden Valley, one of the most beautiful valleys in the Toubkal region.
Compared with the main Imlil and Mount Toubkal routes, Azzaden often feels quieter and more remote.
Red and ochre-coloured villages appear along the mountainsides, surrounded by green agricultural terraces and high rocky peaks.
During the trek, we stop in a peaceful location for lunch.
Our trekking cook will prepare a fresh Moroccan meal. Depending on the season and location, lunch may include traditional salads, cooked vegetables, tagine, local bread, fruit and Moroccan mint tea.
There is no need to rush.
Part of the Toubkal Treks experience is taking time to enjoy the mountains and allowing the day’s journey to follow a comfortable trekking rhythm.
During the afternoon, we continue along the Azzaden Valley towards Ait Ouaougmout.
The final section of the day’s walk provides beautiful views of traditional Berber settlements and the surrounding mountain landscape.
On arrival, we settle into our local guesthouse.
After several hours on the trail, there will be time to relax, enjoy Moroccan mint tea and experience the peaceful atmosphere of the Azzaden Valley.
In the evening, a traditional dinner will be served at the guesthouse.
Far from the traffic and noise of Marrakech, your first night is spent surrounded by the villages and mountains of the High Atlas.
Walking Time: Approximately 5–6 hours
Difficulty: Moderate
Meals: Lunch and Dinner
Accommodation: Traditional Berber Guesthouse in Ait Ouaougmout
Trekking Area: Azzaden Valley
After breakfast at the guesthouse, we prepare for one of the most memorable days of the trek.
Today, we leave the inhabited sections of the Azzaden Valley and gradually enter a wilder mountain environment.
Our destination is Azib Tamsoult Refuge, but first we will make a special detour to the impressive Tamsoult Waterfalls.
Leaving Ait Ouaougmout, we follow mountain trails through the upper sections of the valley.
The landscape gradually changes as we gain altitude.
The cultivated terraces and villages of the lower valley begin to disappear behind us, replaced by rocky slopes, mountain vegetation and increasingly dramatic views.
This transition is one of the most beautiful parts of the journey.
You can physically feel yourself moving away from village life and deeper into the mountains.
The walking pace is steady, with regular opportunities to stop for water and photographs.
Your guide will manage the route according to the group and weather conditions.
We continue towards Tamsoult Waterfalls, one of the natural highlights of the western Toubkal region.
Hidden among the rugged mountain landscapes, the waterfalls provide a spectacular contrast to the dry rocky slopes of the High Atlas.
The sound of flowing water becomes stronger as we approach.
Depending on the season and recent rainfall or snowmelt, the volume of water can vary, but the surrounding mountain scenery remains impressive throughout the trekking season.
We take time to explore the waterfall area and enjoy the peaceful setting.
Rather than making a quick stop and continuing immediately, we plan our lunch around the waterfall experience.
Our trekking team will prepare a fresh lunch in a suitable mountain location near the waterfalls.
After the morning hike, this is the perfect place to remove your backpack, rest your legs and enjoy the surrounding scenery.
A traditional Moroccan lunch will be served, accompanied by local bread and Moroccan mint tea.
The experience of eating a freshly prepared meal in the mountains is often one of the unexpected highlights of trekking in Morocco.
There are no busy restaurants and no traffic.
Only the mountains, the waterfall and your trekking team.
After lunch and a well-earned rest, we continue towards the Tamsoult mountain refuge.
The landscape becomes more remote as we climb higher.
Azib Tamsoult is situated in an isolated mountain setting and serves as an important base for hikers crossing between the Azzaden Valley and Imlil region.
On arrival at the refuge, you will check into your accommodation.
Where available, Toubkal Treks arranges a private room at the Tamsoult Refuge for our guests.
Please note that private room availability may depend on the season and refuge occupancy, so early booking is recommended.
The remainder of the afternoon is yours to relax.
You may sit outside the refuge, enjoy the mountain views or simply rest after the day’s hike.
As evening arrives, temperatures can drop quickly in the mountains.
Inside the refuge, we enjoy a warm dinner prepared by our trekking team.
Spending the night in Tamsoult is very different from staying in a hotel.
It is a genuine mountain hut experience and one of the elements that makes this three-day trek special.
Walking Time: Approximately 5–6 hours
Difficulty: Moderate
Highlights: Azzaden Valley and Tamsoult Waterfalls
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Accommodation: Azib Tamsoult Mountain Refuge – Private Room Subject to Availability
Today is our mountain crossing day.
After an early breakfast at the refuge, we prepare our daypacks and begin the final stage of the trek.
The exact route will be selected by your mountain guide according to weather conditions, snow, trail conditions and the fitness level of the group.
Where conditions allow, stronger hikers may follow the higher route towards Tizi n’Tzikert at approximately 2,900 metres.
Alternatively, we cross via the classic and spectacular Tizi Mzik Pass at 2,489 metres.
Both routes provide an unforgettable final day in the High Atlas Mountains.
For fit and experienced hikers, and when mountain conditions are suitable, the higher Tizi n’Tzikert route offers a more challenging final day.
Leaving the refuge, we begin a sustained climb through high mountain terrain.
The vegetation becomes sparse as we gain altitude, and the landscape feels increasingly wild.
This is a real mountain trekking environment.
The ascent requires good fitness and steady pacing, but your local guide will control the rhythm of the climb.
As we approach the higher sections of the route, panoramic views begin to open across the surrounding High Atlas peaks.
Reaching approximately 2,900 metres is a rewarding achievement.
After taking time to enjoy the views and recover from the climb, we begin our descent towards the Imlil side of the mountains.
The alternative route follows the classic trail towards Tizi Mzik Pass at 2,489 metres.
From the Tamsoult area, the trail gradually climbs towards the pass.
Although lower than the high route, Tizi Mzik remains a rewarding mountain crossing and offers some of the finest views in the region.
From the pass, you can look back across the beautiful Azzaden Valley.
On the opposite side, the Imlil Valley and surrounding villages appear below.
It is a spectacular moment.
Over the previous three days, you have crossed the mountains from Imi Oughlad, travelled through the Azzaden Valley and spent a night in the remote Tamsoult area.
Now, standing on Tizi Mzik, you can see the final destination of your trek.
From the mountain pass, we begin the long descent towards Imlil.
The trail gradually leads us back into the greener mountain landscapes.
Walnut trees, cultivated terraces and Berber villages slowly reappear as we lose altitude.
During the descent, we stop for a freshly prepared lunch in a scenic location.
After lunch, we continue towards Imlil.
The final kilometres provide time to reflect on the journey and enjoy the last views of the High Atlas Mountains.
On arrival in Imlil, our three-day trek comes to an end.
There will be time to rest and enjoy a glass of traditional Moroccan mint tea before meeting your driver.
We then leave the High Atlas Mountains and drive back to Marrakech.
Arrival at your accommodation is expected during the late afternoon or evening, depending on the selected mountain route and walking pace.
You return to Marrakech having crossed Berber valleys, visited a remote mountain waterfall, slept in a mountain refuge and completed one of the most beautiful short trekking journeys in the High Atlas.
Walking Time: Approximately 6–7 hours
Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging
Highest Point: Up to approximately 2,900m depending on route
Meals: Breakfast and Lunch
Transfer: Imlil to Marrakech
This trek can be organised all year round, with each season offering a different experience in the High Atlas Mountains. However, during the winter and early spring months, heavy snowfall may occasionally affect the higher mountain passes and trails around Tamsoult.
If snow conditions are too deep or make the planned route unsuitable, Toubkal Treks may modify the itinerary and select an alternative trekking route. This decision is made for the safety and comfort of our guests and also for the welfare of the mules that carry luggage, food and trekking equipment.
Our experienced local mountain team will choose the most suitable alternative according to current snow, weather and trail conditions. Whenever a route change is necessary, we aim to maintain the spirit of the original trek by combining beautiful High Atlas scenery, traditional Berber villages and an authentic mountain experience.
The mountains decide the conditions; our local team makes sure your adventure remains safe, rewarding and unforgettable.
The first night is spent in a traditional Berber guesthouse in Ait Ouaougmout in the Azzaden Valley.
This gives you the opportunity to stay within a local mountain community and experience genuine Berber hospitality.
The second night is spent at the Azib Tamsoult mountain refuge.
Where possible, Toubkal Treks arranges a private room for our guests. Private rooms remain subject to refuge availability, particularly during busy trekking periods.
The mountain refuge offers simple facilities and an authentic trekking atmosphere.
Most of those equipment can be rented locally from our equipment shop in Imlil:
This trek is suitable for individuals with moderate to high fitness levels. Some sections are challenging but manageable with proper preparation.
The ideal time is from April to October, offering pleasant weather and clear views. Winter months are also possible but may require additional gear for snow.
One of the special elements of trekking with Toubkal Treks is enjoying freshly prepared food during your mountain journey.
Our trekking team prepares Moroccan and Berber-style meals using locally available ingredients whenever possible.
Lunches may include Moroccan salads, vegetables, pasta, rice, tagine, local bread, fruit and mint tea.
Breakfast and dinner are served at your accommodation.
Vegetarian and vegan meals can be arranged.
Please inform us before the trek about allergies or special dietary requirements.
A mule is used to transport the main trekking equipment, food and luggage during the trek.
You only need to carry a small daypack containing your water, camera, sun protection and personal items required during the day’s walk.
We recommend packing your overnight belongings in a soft trekking bag rather than a hard suitcase.
Find the trek you are interested in then contact us via E-mail to discuss your trek and check availability. Once the details of your trek (duration, route and number of people) have been agreed, we will make a provisional booking, giving the dates and cost.
To confirm your booking we ask you to pay a 20% deposit. This can be in Euros, pounds sterling or US dollars online via bank account. The balance is paid in Morocco by cash – again in Euros, sterling or dollars – at the beginning of the trek.
NB: if you can’t carry cash, you can always pay again the balance online by bank few days before departure.
